He was born Sept. 10, 1934, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Danish parents, Bothilda Hansen Appel & Otto Appel.
Paul graduated from Graettinger High School in Graettinger, Iowa, in 1953, where he starred in football, basketball, baseball, and track. After high school, Paul enlisted and served two years in the U.S. Army, assigned to and stationed with the 291st Field Artillery Battalion in Schwabisch Hall, Germany.
Paul was a graduate of Morningside University in Sioux City Iowa, The University of Iowa Dental School, Iowa City, Iowa where he was in the Chi Psi Fraternity.
He graduated with honors and was the president of his dental class.
Upon graduating, he started his dental practice in Monona, and retired when he was 59 years old.
Paul was a member of the Methodist Church in Monona where he was the president of the church board in the late 50s. He was on the board of directors at the local YMCA on the east side of Madison and was instrumental in the building of the facility in 1977.
Paul was the president of the local dental society, a member of the Optimist Club in Dane County teaching oratory to students and he was a Little League coach for several years.
Upon moving to Santa Rosa Beach, he was on the board of directors for the Friends Of Eden Gardens State Park, attended The Chapel at Crosspoint Campus and was a lifelong member of the Santa Rosa Beach Country Club.
Paul had countless hobbies. When he was 15 he earned his pilots license and started playing golf. Other than golf, in which he had several holes-in-one at Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison and at the Minocqua Country Club, he enjoyed wood-working crafting one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture for family and friends.
He was an aspiring architect so he turned to designing his own home in Florida, as well as rehabbing many others along the way. Paul had countless talents. He could fix and repair practically anything. Throughout his life he enjoyed painting and making furniture. He played softball and loved bowling in his early years in Wisconsin. He also loved to travel; especially to Europe, the Caribbean and took many ski trips to Colorado with his family.
Prior to moving to Santa Rosa Beach, Paul & Bett spent summers at their cabins in Hayward on Spider & Grindstone Lakes, then in the Minocqua area on Two Sisters Lake, where he enjoyed golfing at the Minocqua Country Club.
It was there where he was instrumental in designing/rehabbing the old Country Club. He was also a member of the Restless Weasels and was once the “King Weasel.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Zona (Starcky) Appel, brothers Einer, Hans, Henry, Ingvert and Christian.
Paul is survived by his wife Bett (Poulos) Appel, his daughters Kristin Appel (Luke) and Barbara (Dave) Martinelli, stepdaughter Kelly (Stu) Peterson, son William (Heather) Appel, stepson Dr. Mark Bojeun, his grandchildren Andrea Martinelli, Tony Martinelli, Alicia Appel, Alexander Kutler, Kaitlin Kutler, Will Appel, Ian Appel and brother-in-law William Powers and sister-in law Cindy Powers.
The family would like to recognize the wonderful support and care from the tireless staff at Watercrest, especially Dawn, Summer, Susan, and Kim. As well as to his caregivers Rafael Quintin, Patricia Harris and Janet Rahimova. A special thank you to his best friend Ralph Crossley, brother-in-law Bill Powers, Hank White and John Stroop. Paul was under the care of Emerald Coast Hospice.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the College of Dentistry, University of Iowa, 801 Newton Road, Iowa City, Iowa. A celebration of life will be held later in the year.
