December 19, 1926 ~ February 4, 2022
After a wonderful 95-year life, Harry Griswold passed away at his current home at the Aspen Assisted Living Residence in Woodland Park, Colo..
Harry was born December 19, 1926 in Racine, to Henry and Edna (Solper) Griswold. He attended Horlick High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1944 with bachelor of science degrees in both mechanical engineering and naval science, and a commission from the US Navy as ensign.
He served in the United States Navy during both World War II and Korea. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until the Navy transferred Lt. Harry S. Griswold to Retired Reserve in 1966.
Harry married Mary Thomas, also of Racine, in 1956. They lived in Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Indianapolis, Detroit, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Gladstone, Mich., before retiring to their lakeside home in Arbor Vitae, where they lived until Mary succumbed to cancer just one month short of their 60th wedding anniversary. One year later, Harry moved to Woodland Park, Colo. to live closer to family, a move he never regretted!
Harry began his civilian career in sales and then manufacturing of marine engines and jet propelled fiberglass boats. He then joined Harnischfeger Corporation as district manager in 1965 and retired in 1988 as product manager of construction machinery.
Harry and Mary moved to Arbor Vitae in 1988, where he was President of the AV-W School Board for seven years, during the time of the construction of the new school building. As a member of Holy Family Catholic Church he served as lector, commentator, Eucharistic minister, and leader of prayer and communion service in the absence of a priest. Harry and Mary participated in skiing, biking and canoeing activities of the Northwoods Ski Touring Association. They also participated in many Elderhostel (Road Scholar) programs throughout the United States.
Harry is survived by three children: Gail Griswold McGrath (Kevin) of Divide, Colo., Susan Mary Griswold (Jay Hetzel) of Woodland Park, Colo., and Thomas Henry Griswold (Barbie) of Sparta, Mich.; and five grandchildren: Megan McGrath, Colin McGrath, Brendan McGrath, Samuel Griswold, and Spencer Griswold.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and his wife, Mary Griswold.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18 at Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church located in Woodland Park. Family will be available at 10 a.m. on Friday for visitation.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Solaris Hospice, 150 Morning Sun Drive, Suite 202, Woodland Park, CO 80863 or a charity of your choice.
