Erna married George Baumgartner on July 30, 1955. They moved to Arlington Heights, Ill. in 1958 where they started raising their three sons. In 1972 Erna and George moved to Lake Tomahawk where they purchased the Shamrock Bar. They sold the bar in 1978 and Erna started working for Lakeland Medical (later Marshfield Clinic) and continued working until her retirement in 2008.
Erna was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 49 years. In the past she was a Eucharistic Minister, enjoyed golfing with her husband, gardening and trips to Las Vegas. After her husband passed away, she became more active at Holy Family Catholic Church, joining the Circle of Women, the prayer shawl group, and helping with funeral lunches. She enjoyed her monthly lunches with fellow retirees from Marshfield Clinic, weekly card games with her friends, reading, and going to the casino.
Erna was preceded in death by her husband George and her sister, Elsie Herdegen. She is survived by three sons — Mark (Pam) of Dayton, Minn., John (Susan) of Minneapolis, and Tom (Kara) of Maumelle, Ariz., six grandchildren — Janet (Brandon) Gromek, Michael, Patrick, Alan, Connor and Evan and one great-granddaughter, Blayke. She is further survived by her nieces Patricia McDonald of Melrose Park, Ill. and Sylvia Elbert of Fort Wayne, Ind. in addition to many other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday, Aug. 30, with visitation at 10 a.m. followed by Mass at 11 a.m. A luncheon will be served in the parish hall following the services.
