Dr. Robert “Bob” Sookochoff
Dr. Robert “Bob” Sookochoff passed away on July 28, 2022, at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer. He was a beloved spouse, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and caring physician. Bob grew up in Vancouver, BC, and after attending medical school at the University of British Columbia and residency in Ottawa, settled on Manitoulin Island in Little Current, Ontario in 1981. He took his practice to Spring Valley, Minn. in 1987, and then to Eagle River, in 1994. After a number of years in medical leadership, Bob ended his career with the Forest County Potawatami Health & Wellness Center in Crandon. Throughout a 42-year career as a family physician and leader, Dr. Bob cared for thousands of people and specialized in primary care, with a passion for rural and indigenous communities. He was a lifelong learner, receiving his MBA later in life, and had a keen interest in developing physician leaders, with a focus on keeping patients first. A prolific luthier, boat-builder, and woodworker, Bob enjoyed woodturning and woodworking with his sons, and building birdhouses with his grandchildren. When not in his shop, he could be found fishing from one of his restored boats or tapping hundreds of maple trees with his family and friends.
Bob is survived by his wife Kitty, mother Lois, sons Jesse (Amy), Michael (Cristina), and David (Tasha), as well as his grandchildren, sisters, and many cherished relatives and friends. Bob’s friends and family will continue to honor his legacy at a celebration of life on Friday, Aug. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Eagle Waters Resort. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Northwoods Children's Museum or Feed Our Rural Kids (FORK).
Arrangements by Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home, Eagle River. Online condolences may be expressed at gaffney-busha.com.
