On Jan. 20, 1938, Al was born to Royal and Mary Mattke in Milwaukee. His dream of living in the Northwoods was inspired by his trips to visit his grandparents in Woodruff. As he got older, Al would make the trek to Woodruff from Milwaukee on his bicycle. Sometimes getting food and shelter from area farmers. While working at Frankfurth Hardware, he met the love of his life Judy. They were eventually married on Sept. 20, 1971.
