Clemetta Spanier Evenson


Clemetta Evenson, 101, of Mercer, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 23, at her home. Clemetta was born on June 18, 1920 in Chicago, the daughter of the late Peter and Rose (Roeder) Spanier. She received her nursing diploma from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago in 1941. She enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in February 1942 and was stationed at Scott Field, East St. Louis, Ill. Clemetta met and married Capt. Warren Evenson, of Mercer, on March 13, 1943, while at Scott Field. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1993.
Clemetta graduated in the 3rd class of the Army Air Evacuation Training Program at Bowman Field, KY in January 1944. She then served as a 1st Lt. in the European Theater as a flight nurse until September 1945. She received an honorable discharge from the Army of the United States on October 4, 1945.
Clemetta received a BA degree from the University of Illinois, Springfield in 1972, and later a Master’s degree in Nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit, in 1977. She is a member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, a life member of Mercer VFW Post 9536, a member of the Mercer Historical Society and Friends of the Mercer Library.
Clemetta held many positions in nursing during her life. She was a nursing instructor at the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Ill. She employed as Inservice Director at Howard Young Hospital, Woodruff, from 1972 until 1980. Clemetta was also a nursing instructor at North Central Technical College and later became Director of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Nicolet College until her retirement in 1997. She served as a nursing clinical examiner with Excelsior College external degree program until 2007. The family summered in Mercer from 1945 and moved to Mercer in 1972, when Warren accepted a position as administrator of the Mercer School.
Surviving are two sons, Paul (Karen) of Newark, Del. and Alan of Mercer; three grandchildren, Mark (Simone Bossert), Vienna , Austria, Catherine Kebrich, Towson, MD, and Elizabeth of Washington, D.C., and a great granddaughter, Daisy Ella Evenson, Vienna, Austria.
Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.
Celebration of Life Services at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church and Funeral Services will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends of Mercer Public Library, Mercer Area Historical Society or the VFW would be appreciated.
