Robert F. Balas


Robert F. Balas (Bob), 84 passed away on April 21, 2020 at home. Bob was born on December 4, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Julia and John Balas. Bob served in the Army for three years and part of his duty was in Germany. He met the love of his life, Marlene Peterson, at Valparaiso University. They were married in 1960.
Bob had degrees from Valparaiso University, Northern Illinois University, and the University of Denver which granted him a Ph.D. He had a traineeship in audiology at the Veterans Hospital in Denver and worked in the Denver Otologic Group as an audiologist. He was chairman of the department of audiology and speech at Gallaudet College and then chairman of the speech pathology and audiology department at Ithaca College. Bob spent 24 years at UWSP in Stevens Point. He served as an Associate Dean and Head of the School of Communicative Disorders as well as the school’s coordinator of academic advising.
Bob was an active member in churches in which he belonged. He taught Sunday school, participated in the Stephen Ministries, preached when there was a vacancy for a pastor, led forums, and gave children sermons with and without the puppet Jenna.
Bob enjoyed getting together with family and friends, community theater, playing tennis and golf. He appreciated the serenity of the Northwoods and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and brother John Balas. He is survived by his beloved wife Marlene and their children Dr. Mark Balas of Winchester, and Lynn Gregory of St. Charles, Ill. Bob is survived by five grandchildren: Michael, Emily, and Everett Gregory and Stephanie and Scott Balas. In addition, he is survived by six siblings: Ed Balas, Joanne Green, Bill Balas, Fred Balas, Julia Balas, and Ronald Balas and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m on Saturday October 2 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Minocqua and a memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ascension Lutheran Church.

James T. Bauman

James T. Bauman, 93, of Lac du Flambeau, died Sept. 8. 
A Mass will be held on Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lac du Flambeau with military honors following the church service. The Rev. Maria Joseph Kodiganti will officiate.  A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to services. Masks required.
Memorials to James can be made to either St Anthony’s Catholic Church or Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.
