Judith Kay (Hyser) Mirhoseini

Judith Kay (Hyser) Mirhoseini died August 27 at her home in Greenfield, Wisconsin, at the age of 83. Judy was born in Springfield, Ohio, on November 15, 1937, to Emma Kathryn (Smith) Hyser and Charles Lee Hyser. After high school, Judy enrolled in the nursing program at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, where she met her former husband, Mahmood. After a few years in Winnipeg, Canada, Athens, Wis. and Medford the family settled in Wausau in 1969. Judy was employed periodically as a registered nurse and then worked for many years at Wausau’s North Central Health Care’s EACH Program, a day service program serving adults with developmental disabilities. She began as a volunteer and was eventually promoted to Director because of her characteristic skill, drive, and dedication, while also bringing up five children. In 1987, after her kids were grown, she and her partner, Duane, became owners of Pope’s Gresham Lodge in Arbor Vitae. They sold Pope’s in 1998 and retired to a home in Manitowish Waters. Judy was finally able to spend more time enjoying and sharing the outdoors with her grandkids when they visited. She also loved doing challenging jigsaw and word puzzles, playing Sudoku, watching her beloved Brewers, baking and making candy for the holidays, and — when she had at least some of her kids together – beating them at Scrabble. After Duane’s death in 2011, Judy moved to the Milwaukee area to be closer to daughters there. But Judy always missed the Northwoods, where she spent her happiest moments.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, sister (Marilyn) Sue Atchley, partner Duane Moe and their loyal dogs Nikkita and Shadow, great-grandson Theo Schlicht, and son-in-law James Chiroff. She is survived by her children Andrea (James) Chiroff, Greenfield; David (Nadine) Mirhoseini, Mt. Clare, W.Va.; Laura Mirhoseini, Franklin; Krista (Rory) Mirhoseini, Seattle; Sheila (Tom) Helm, Minneapolis; and her four-legged furry “child” (Judy’s words) Lucy; grandchildren Callie, Katherine, Griffin, Madeline, Maeve, Sarah, Hannah Rose, and Holly; and great-grandchildren Ada and Sloane.
At her request, Judy will be cremated and her ashes scattered among the woods in Wisconsin and Alaska.
