Arthur L. Rice III, 75, of Barrington, Illinois passed away Sept. 18 with his wife and three children at his side.
Art was born April 8, 1946 in Evanston, Ill. to Carol (Fingulin) and Arthur L. Rice Jr. who both preceded him in death. He married Lynn Alice (Davies) Rice on Sept. 6, 1968. Art was a graduate of Barrington High School in 1964, received a B.A. in history from DePauw University in 1968 and served in the Army Reserves for five years after graduation. Art and Lynn settled in Barrington in 1976 in the Westwood neighborhood and in 1979 purchased the Oakwood Hill Farm on Cuba Road in Cuba Township.
Art was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He would tell any newlywed that the must-have words for a husband were “yes dear” and it worked well for him with Lynn for 53 years. He was a positive spirit and an optimist who always saw the best in people. Art believed that there was good in everyone and would be there to support those who needed it. He could strike up a conversation with any stranger and quickly find common ground. Art was a people person and loved connecting.
Art’s career started with the Technical Publishing Company in 1970. He spent 16 years there in sales, sales management and ultimately leading the publishing efforts of seven different trade publications during his tenure. In 1987, Art accepted the responsibility publishing Power Engineering and Electric Light & Power magazines at PennWell publishing company. While there, he was a catalyst in the creation of PowerGen, which remains as the world’s largest power generation trade show. Art’s first retirement came in 1994. However, he quickly found himself invested in and serving as the Chairman of Applied Technology Media which he helped co-found and run for many more years.
Publishing was not his only passion. Art served his community as a Trustee for Cuba Township and the North Barrington Area Association, as well as being heavily involved in the Community Church of Barrington. He was an ardent supporter of his alma mater, Barrington High School and volunteered heavily with Citizens for Conservation during their early years. His proudest legacy was that of his three children and grandchildren. While not frequently enough, he did know how to relax and enjoyed shooting skeet, casting a fly rod, playing the occasional round of golf and watching the sun set on the porch of the Farm. Art’s roots also grew deeper in the Northwoods of Wisconsin where Art & Lynn’s “Bear Cabin” on High Lake in Boulder Junction served as his favorite place to relax, particularly when fishing off the pontoon boat with any of his eight grandchildren. He would often mimic the call of a loon which brought that familiar soulful response. Art loved to fish and bird hunt (preferably with a yellow or black Labrador). He was able to enjoy many fishing and hunting trips around the US and Canada and smiled every time he brought a fish or bird to hand. He enjoyed his “Jack on the Rocks” after his days afield reminiscing about the good times with those nearby.
Art preferred when someone smiled. Yet when they weren’t, he would go out of his way to try to change that. One of his favorite methods was to give out Smiley Face cookies from Clarke’s Bakery with his signature comment: “Smile, it looks good on you.”
Art is survived by his wife Lynn, his sister Emily Douglass, sister Carol (Jay) Bowditch, son Andrew (Yuliya) Rice, daughter Sarah (Ty) Ratliff, son Dan (Kate) Rice; grandchildren Sasha and Philip Rice; Audrey, Emmitt, Grayden Ratliff and Ella, Quinn and Bridger Rice.
A Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. with a Memorial Service starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Community Church of Barrington, 301 East Lincoln Avenue, Barrington, IL 60010. Please bring and share your good stories about Art while we celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, Lynn would ask that memorial donations be directed to the Community Church of Barrington so that his generosity can continue into the future. Please be sure to indicate on your contribution that your donation is in honor of Art Rice.
In all your days ahead, as you remember Art, please be kind, say hello to someone new, pay it forward, tip more than you normally would and smile … because it looks good on you.
