“We kind of just brought it up to each other, we said ‘Hey, maybe we could just go out on our own and try it,’” Prieve said. “We just went on, and here we are.”
Though Calhoun has 40 years of experience as a mechanic and Prieve has three, the pair were quick to know that they would make a dynamic team. After the hassles of paperwork, wrangling with banks and drumming up publicity, Bulldog’s Service Center formally opened its doors on Sept. 7.
“We do all repair work on snowmobiles, ATVs, UTVs. Tires for everything: cars, trailers, motorcycles,” Prieve said. “Anything that has a tire on it, we’ll give it an effort to fix it, and we should be able to get it done.”
Next year, Prieve and Calhoun hope to add shrink wrap service for boats.
Of course, Bulldog’s Service Center also has an adorable namesake. Calhoun’s bulldog Ginger, one of three dogs who can often be found on the premises, is the garage’s mascot.
“She likes being out in the shop, so we named it after her,” Prieve said.
Two dogs belonging to Prieve’s girlfriend Paula Welch — Athena the French bulldog and Precious the Shih Tzu — keep Ginger company as well.
One of the things that has changed the most for Prieve since starting his own business?
“Aw, jeez, the paperwork,” he said. “I gotta do all the paperwork. I just wrenched before, now I gotta do everything … (but) I just wanted to go out on my own. Just to do my own thing once. I’m to the age where either I’m going to do it or I’m not.”
