Ross was a proud World War II veteran. He served in the Army Air Corp as a pilot where he flew a twin-engine P-38 Lightning in the 15th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron in Italy. After the war ended he studied marketing at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Ross and his first wife, Ruth, had two daughters. Ross entered the world of advertising sales management and worked for the Des Moines Register and the Milwaukee Journal until 1983.
After retirement, Ross spent many happy years traveling with his second wife, Lerae. They went to Mexico, Jamaica, France, China, Greece and Italy. Ross and Lerae spent their winters in Sarasota and their summers in Manitowish Waters. He was able to play golf year round, which was his passion. In later years, Ross and Lerae traveled all over the USA in an RV with their two dogs, Raimus and Pepper.
In 2019, Ross was honored to take a Soaring Valor trip to New Orleans with Gary Sinise and 26 other WWII veterans. That same year he took an Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. Ross is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Lerae. He is survived by his two daughters Deborah (Dean) Garny and Jill (Scott) Miller, four grandchildren, Jamie, Joshua, Jacob and Nicholas, six step-children and eight great-grandchildren.
A military service will be held at the Sarasota National Military Cemetery on May 3, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Toale Brothers of Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, a donation is suggested to the Gary Sinise Foundation or the WWII Museum in New Orleans.
