Mae was born in Coushatta, LA on May 23, 1928. After high school, she married Glen Smith, and started a family of four children. They divorced in Farmington N.M. in 1960. In Farmington, Mae met her husband of 58 years, James Michelson, a geologist in the oil business. After marriage in 1962, they added another child, Lisette, to their family and raised the children, following the oil business boom towns. In 1988, they retired to Florida, where they enjoyed over 30 years of retirement.
Mae was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved all of her children dearly and raised them to be respectful, thoughtful, and responsible adults. She was entirely devoted to her family. Mae endured heartbreak with class and grace when her daughter, Kay, was murdered in a home invasion and another, Judy, died of natural causes. She also endured many years of declining health with humor and optimism. She also had a great sense of humor and was able to laugh through good and bad times.
Mae's hobbies were cooking, sewing and decorating her homes. She was an excellent gourmet cook and a popular member of her yacht and petroleum clubs. She especially loved to host parties for family and friends.
A Celebration of Life for Mae Michelson will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 14, at Bolger Funeral Home - Minocqua Chapel, 212 W. Chicago Ave., followed by a graveside service at Lakeside Garden of Sleep Cemetery in Hazelhurst.
