Anne Wilhelmina Smith Traer
Born in Highland Park, Ill. Anne graduated from her cheerleading years at Highland Park High School with a scholarship to the Goodman Theater for theater and dance at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Anne was involved in the PTA at Everett School in Lake Forest, Ill. and was a member of the Cradle Society of Chicago and Passavant/Northwestern Memorial Hospital and also modeled for their annual fundraisers. Anne volunteered at Lake Forest Hospital and later headed the volunteers for the Howard Young Medical Center in Minocqua.
On a weekend at a fishing camp in northern Wisconsin, Anne met Milton McNeill Traer. They married the following year and resided in Lake Forest for 21 years.
Loving the Northwoods, they moved from the Chicago area to Minocqua in 1972.
Anne and Milton owned and operated The Mole Hole in Minocqua for 13 years with the help of their manager Donna Petersen.
Mom was an avid gardener, bird watcher and a ruthless ping-pong and rummy cube player well into her 80s. While vehemently denying it we believe she may have cheated at croquet. She had a way with words, a fierce wit and was adopted by our countless friends over her long life as a second mom. She was the last of a kind. We miss you Mom.
Anne is survived by her children: Deborah Sturgis, Polly, Charles, Steven and Glenn (deceased), five grandchildren, Katie, Miles, Annie, Will and Martha and five great-grandchildren Vera, Rylin, Winnie, Margo and Hobbes.
