Elmer was born on March 21, 1935 in Kenosha, the son of the late Ernest and Hattie (Ricke) Martin. He graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1953.
Always active, Elmer enjoyed down-hill skiing, duck hunting, snowmobiling, and especially racing cars. He was employed by American Motors Chrysler Corporation for 30 years, and belonged to the International Association of Machinists.
In 1977, he married the love of his life, Cam (Mary E. Karau), at St. Mary’s Lutheran Church in Kenosha, and they celebrated 44 wonderful years of marriage.
Elmer retired from American Motors at the age of 50, and they moved to Fence Lake in Minocqua. They enjoyed many years in the beautiful Northwoods at their home on Paradise Bay Lane where he spent a lot of time fishing (especially making his own jigs), snowmobiling, squirrel watching, and hunting.
In 2013, Elmer and Cam moved to Florida to enjoy life without the worries of Wisconsin winters. They lived in the beautiful community of Timber Pines in Spring Hill, Fla., and were surrounded by many caring neighbors and friends. They were active members of Nativity Lutheran Church, and Elmer took special pride in the wood crosses he made for new members of the congregation.
A devoted grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren – teaching them to fish, providing guidance and support, taking them for rides on his ATV, “Buggsy”, sharing meals and snacks, and most of all, love.
Elmer is survived by his wife Cam, step-daughters, Kristi (Mike) Monahan; Karen (John) Schmitz; and Karmin Maritato. Grandchildren David Hunt, Christopher Schmitz, Thomas (Lindsey) Schmitz, Alan Schmitz, Miranda and Madeline Maritato, Jessica Monahan; great-grandchildren, Heaven, Hayes, Cashton, Paxton, and Gemma Hunt, Laila Schmitz, Kinsley and Carson Schmitz; and great-great grandchildren, Lennon and Easton; sister-in-law, Shirley Campbell; brother-in-law, Howard Zelenski; beloved nieces and nephews, Doris (Mike) Carney, Debbie (Martin) Mettan, Susan, Ruth, Karen, Kim, Earl, Ernie, Linda, Gail, Craig, and Kathryn.
Elmer was preceded in death by his brothers, Leslie, Laurence, Herb, and William, and sisters Helen Nimmerguth, Violet Desotell, and Bertha (Lou) Zelenski; brothers-in-law, Earl Desotell, W.T. (Barney) Barndollar, George Nimmerguth, George and Edward Campbell; and sisters-in-law, Florence Martin, and Kay Campbell; and niece, Diane Martin, and nephew Tom Barndollar.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, at Nativity Lutheran Church (6363 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, Fla.) followed by a luncheon at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Nativity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
