Palmer William (Bill) Hanson


Palmer William (Bill) Hanson, 95, died on July 10. Bill was the son of the late P. C. and Mildred Hanson. He is survived by his brother John and his children Gwen McGrath (Frank), Lynne (Terrence Hines), William, and Carol Rojahn (Richard). He is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Jean.
Bill was born August 15, 1925 in Wausau and raised in Manitowish Waters. Bill attended the one room schoolhouse in Manitowish Waters and Wausau High School. He and Jean relocated to Barrington, Ill. and raised their family there. Sarasota, Fla. was their winter home for many years until they made it their permanent home.
Bill was a pilot. After high school, he joined the Navy and became a naval aviator. Upon completion of active duty, he joined the Navy Reserves where he achieved the rank of Commander. Bill also had a 30 year flying career as an American Airlines captain. During his career, Bill flew a wide variety of military, commercial and private aircraft, including a hot air balloon.
Upon his retirement, Bill became an avid golfer. He and Jean made many close friends through their shared love of the game.
Interment with military honors will be held October 15, at Sarasota National Cemetery.
