Susann Kennedy Roessel
Sue was born, the oldest of three daughters, in Tomahawk during the winter of 1950 to Raymond and Apryle Kennedy (who preceded her in death). She attended Minocqua Grade School and Lakeland Union High School (1968), spending her childhood in the Northwoods, riding horses, hunting and fishing with her father. She always said she was the son her father never had. She was in awe of the outdoors, whether spying a deer wandering through her yard or stopping while kayaking to watch an eagle soar. The woods were home to her.
Sue’s love of the “up north” was second only to her love for her family. She was lucky enough to find the light of her life at an early age, marrying Henry Roessel (Hank) in June of 1971 at the age of 21.
They lived a loving, respectful and engaging marriage that provided a beautiful example for their children and grandchildren. Holding hands, dancing in the kitchen and exchanging loving greeting cards sustained each of them through 50 years of adventures. Whether skiing out west, touring Europe, exploring Asia, or on safari in South Africa, they never parted. Few people have lived their life as completely or with such devotion and joy as Sue.
Sue cherished her three children, Raymond, Stacey and Tyler. You could find her yelling from the sidelines at every basketball, little league and soccer game. She followed crew races across the country, standing in the bitter rain to glimpse a boat for 20 seconds of a race. She was an ardent, compassionate supporter of her family, always there to lift their spirits and raise them up.
Sue was a devoted grandmother who lived for and adored her two grandchildren, Adelaide and Isabelle. You could find her baking cookies, crocheting blankets, rocking a baby to sleep or waiting quietly in the early morning hours for her granddaughters to creep down the stairs and run squealing into her arms. Not once but twice, Sue dropped everything to care for and support her eldest grandchild battling pediatric cancer.
Sue and Hank raised their three children in Madison, where they met and lived for 36 years from 1971 until 2007. She was a strong, smart, successful businesswoman. Sue founded Roessel Real Estate in 1981, specializing in condominium management and consulting. Her strength and organization extended beyond work to her family. Everything had a place, a label and a purpose. She was always thinking of others until the end, leaving us selflessly with grace, instructions and loving goodbyes.
Sue and Hank built their dream home on W. Twin Lake, Hazelhurst, in 1999 and retired to it fulltime in 2007. While living in the Northwoods, she volunteered at MHLT for many years, founded the Lakeland Badger Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association, made new friends and reconnected with old. In October of 2019, Sue and Hank moved to Winchester, Virginia to be closer to her daughter’s family.
A selfless, compassionate woman, Sue was loved and treasured by her family and friends. At the end, she went in peace surrounded by those she loved. She is survived by her children, Ray (Samantha) Roessel, Stacey (Thomas) Flint and Tyler (Nelly Provencale-Dayle) Roessel, sister Jean (Rich) Chamberlain and sister Jyme (John) Riedel and nephew, John Riedel, and granddaughters Adelaide and Isabelle Flint.
