Stephen Douglas Butler

Stephen Douglas Butler, age 71 of Lake Tomahawk, and formally of Hillsboro, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020 at the Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield. He was born June 15, 1949 to Earl and Margie (Shaker) Butler, in Hillsboro and attended Greenwood Country School. Steve grew up on the family farm in rural Hillsboro and later moved to town with Earl and Margie. He will be remembered as the lawn mower and snowblower on Park Avenue for the neighbors. Following his parents death, he moved to Manitowish Waters in 1996 with his brother, then to Lake Tomahawk in 1997 to the Umlauf Adult Family Home. Rodd Umlauf owned an art studio and Steve became interested in painting, doing many paintings and murals, many displayed in the art studio. He also worked at Headwaters (Catholic Charities) in Rhinelander, where he enjoyed the company and friendship of his co-workers and the staff. He had a large train mural displayed in the work area, some 50 feet in length for an extended period of time and also enjoyed the photography club. Following his retirement there in 2017, he said he was just going to do the “fun stuff” now. And he did, everybody in Lake Tomahawk knew Steve riding his 3-wheeled bicycle with the green John Deere toolbox on the back. He was a fixture at the senior citizens get-togethers and local flea market and of course the famous snowshoe baseball games in Lake Tomahawk. He did a lot of Friday night fish fries, wedding and birthday parties with family during this time.  Steve was a member of the Lake Tomahawk Bible Church in Lake Tomahawk. Steve took ill April 1, 2020 and resided at the Riverview Nursing Home, Tomahawk, still doing art and learning about cell phones. He really enjoyed his train and tractor videos. This is the COVID-19 period so he had little family contact, except for telephone and letters. The staff at Riverview in Tomahawk were fantastic as were the staff and doctors at Marshfield Medical Center during his last couple of weeks there. They kept the family updated a couple times a day, even after his death, to express condolences. Survivors include his brothers, William (Beverly) Butler of Winlock, Wash.; Ronald (Lyndall) Butler of Springdale, Ark.; and Thomas (Carol) Butler of Manitowish Waters, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Charles and the oldest brother, Jim.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro with burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hillsboro.
The Picha Funeral Home is assisting the family. For online information, go to www.pichafuneralhomes.com.
