Lenore Bartling
She was born Jan. 24, 1931, to George and Maude Lucille (McNitt) Speas in Necedah. There she attended both elementary and high school before heading off to study at Lawrence University in Appleton, the University of Wisconsin in Madison and earning her degree in Elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
On June 21, 1953, she married Frederic Bartling and soon moved to Manitowish Waters to start their family and establish the Manitowish Cranberry Company. Cranberries became their way of life and the family business continues to thrive now to the fourth generation of the Bartling family.
Fred and Lenore raised their four children on Alder Lake in Manitowish Waters. “Sarge,” as she was affectionately known by friends and family in the area, could often be found outdoors attending to her beautiful gardens, playing tennis or golf, hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, or bird hunting. Her passion for horses left a legacy of horsemanship with her children, nieces and nephews. Adventurous in spirit, Lenore earned her pilot’s license and co-piloted with Fred throughout North America. She also enjoyed many indoor hobbies including music, painting, knitting, and lovingly doting on her grandchildren.
Upon retirement she and Fred wintered in Arizona where they continued to pursue an active lifestyle enjoying mountain trails, golf cart paths and patio vistas.
Lenore is survived by her children Peter (Lynn) Bartling, Rebecca (Rod) Herlitzke, Michael (Barb) Bartling, and Mary (John) Lewis. She’s also survived by nine grandchildren: Emily (Bill) Norman, Morgan (Ashish) Sabnekar, Ben (Sarah) Bartling, Aaron Herlitzke, Steven and David (Becca) Bartling, Phil (Courtney); Joe; and Julie Lewis; as well as five great-grandchildren; Farrah and Scarlett Sabenekar, Adrien Bartling, Calder Lewis, and Lucy Bartling.
A private celebration of Lenore’s life will be planned when the family can safely gather in the summer of 2021.
