Carol (Christian) Berigan

Carol (Christian) Berigan went home to the Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2020 after 81 fruitful years here on Earth. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, graduating from West High and the University of Minnesota with a degree in physical education and health. In 1961 she married the love of her life, Charles (Chuck) Berigan, and moved to Milledgeville, Ill., where she taught in the Lanark, Ill., school system and started a family. Through the years the family also lived in Melrose, Minn.; Pinconning Mich.; and Glen Ellyn, Ill., before retirement brought them to Minocqua in 1993. Carol is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Chuck; daughter, Susan (Steve) Haugesag of Valencia, Spain; son, Michael (Karen Akerlof) of Fairfax Station, Va.; daughter, Mary (Joseph) Schubauer-Berigan of Lyon, France; daughter Patricia (Donald) Young of Naperville, Ill.; and son, William (Nancy) of Elmhurst, Ill.; sisters Charlotte (Steve) Van Slyke of Walla Walla, Wash., and Pamela Christian of Minneapolis; and brother Thomas Christian of Cable. She is the proud grandmother of Kathryn (Steve Walsh), Sarah and Elizabeth Peters; Liam, Cormac and Kieran Berigan; Kevin, Lauren and Jack Young; Patrick and Maggie Berigan; as well as great-grandmother of James and Liam Walsh. Family was always Carol’s top priority and she did a wonderful job of raising five great children.  Another priority was her love of the outdoors and the Northwoods. Not only did she enjoy operating the Sandpiper Resort for 19 years, but she also loved activities like hiking, kayaking, biking, skiing, birdwatching, and playing cards and games with friends. She especially loved dogs and cats. Early on, Carol learned that helping others was an important way for her to find fulfillment. As a result, she lived a life full of volunteer activities including; St. James the Apostle School and Meals on Wheels in Glen Ellyn, volunteer aide at the DuPage Convalescent Center, volunteer at Howard Young Medical Center, docent at Minocqua Museum, 20-plus years volunteer Meals on Wheels deliverer in Minocqua, and numerous other activities aimed at helping others. She exhibited enormous grace and strength in her four year challenge with end stage renal disease.  A special Thank You is due the DaVita Team at Woodruff for their help along the way. Though Carol’s life is being celebrated, she will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Her children are forever grateful to their mother for instilling in them a love of music and reading, a passion for volunteerism, a deep appreciation of nature and adventure, and an independent spirit. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to your local animal shelter (or your favorite charity) would be appreciated. The family wishes to thank Ascension at Home Northern Hospice — Woodruff (Dr Kate) for their care and support. In recognition of the coronavirus threat, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Woodruff. Arrangements are being handled by Nimsgern Funeral and Cremation Services of Woodruff.
Online condolences may be shared at www.nimsgernfuneral.com. Nimsgern Funeral & Cremation Services is serving the family.
