Lakeland DECA qualified 12 students for State DECA Competition with its performance at the District II DECA Competition held at Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids on Friday, Jan. 5. Nearly 500 students from 13 schools participated in the competition.

"Overall, we didn't do as well as in the past," DECA advisor Shawn Umland said. "Students performed well with their role plays; however, their occupational series tests were not nearly to the standard of the past."

Students participate in three events in a specific occupational series they choose. They must complete a 100 question multiple choice test related to their occupational series and participate in two role plays relating to the following topics: product management, promotion, distribution, customer relations, entrepreneurship, management, selling, communications, financial analysis, economics and strategic management, operations, and marketing research.

Students can earn medals in each of the three events in their series, and then all three event scores are added to determine overall series winners. Students could also compete in the economics test and earn a right to compete at state.

This year's International Competition is in Atlanta, Georgia and competition is stiff.

"It is getting more difficult to move forward to state and to international competition as students get college and career ready," Umland said. "If we wish to move forward, students need to take time to research events, practice sample tests, and view sample role play events."

Other LUHS students who competed included: Lisa Driver, Ashley Ullius, Dillon Duwe, Jacob Rexroade, Adreanna Dietrich, Sierra Wodkowski, Kailey Godfrey, Lauren Godfrey, Gary Buchert, and Justin Schlecht.

Thank you business

people

Again, LUHS was well represented with judges again.

"We are so fortunate that business people are willing to share their time and talent in educating our youth. It is this type of relevant and rigorous education opportunity that really helps prepare students for the future," Umland said. Those business people who assisted in judging the role plays included: Dick Sedlak, Kellie Bagwell, Ryan Gehrig, Jane Kinchelo, Todd McEldowney, Sunny Slade, Kyle Lobner, Sam Gillich, Morgan Woodruff, Reece Rich, and Penny Willms.
