41st annual World Championship Musky Classic sees record fish for tournament
With 43 total fish caught during the tournament, fishing could be described as tough, but the derby did see its biggest fish yet measured that weekend. Three 49-inch fish have been caught in the history of the tournament, which dates back to 1977. One 50-inch fish has been caught in the tournament, and that was back in 1987. Gerry Frantz from Waunakee was fishing on Alder Lake when he hooked into a 50.5-inch monster. This catch netted him the largest fish release trophy, sponsored by the Michael Luedtke Memorial and The Lakeland Times. The Township Traveling Trophy, sponsored by Musky Hunter Magazine, went to Manitowish Waters. The Bill Sherer lifetime achievement award was presented to Jeff Long of Boulder Junction.
Proceeds from the tournament are used to fund scholarships for Lakeland Union High School students. Through last year, the World Championship Musky Classic had awarded $168,000 in Ben Bendrick Memorial Scholarships.
Next year's World Championship Musky Classic will be held Sept. 7-9. The awards presentation will be held in the town of Winchester at the town park.
