RHINELANDER - Back on April 6, a slow start in the first half doomed Lakeland Union High School in its Great Northern Conference opener against Rhinelander.

Just 26 days later, the Thunderbirds had a chance to get some revenge against the Lady Hodags when they traveled to Mike Webster Stadium for the rematch on Tuesday night.

Lakeland would not get its revenge, however, as Rhinelander was just too much to handle on this night.

The Lady Hodags scored three goals in a span of six minutes that took the air out of the T-Birds, en route to a 10-0 thumping.

"I think we need to work together more as a team," LUHS head coach Stephanie Hartzheim said. "Our team bonding, on and off the field, is not connecting right now."

Lakeland defenders may have nightmares about Rhinelander star Alayna Franson, who pumped in five goals on the night.

Franson started the scoring with a shot from the top of the box in the 17th minute, followed by a goal by Brooke Mork and another by Franson.

It only took Franson 13 minutes to record the hat trick as Lakeland found itself down 5-0 at halftime.

Franson would eventually score her fifth of the game, which invoked the mercy rule with 7:30 still left on the clock.

At no point did Lakeland give up during the game, but the performance even shocked the five-time defending GNC champions.

"Lakeland is a much better team than the product they put on the field tonight," Rhinelander head coach Dan Millot said. "I think once they get it together, they're going to be tough and they should be playing better than they're playing right now. All of us - at one time or another - go into these ruts and I just hope they can find their way out of it soon."

Goalkeeper Clair Kaminski was under duress all night, as Rhinelander took 29 shots, with 16 of them hitting the net. Kaminski made six saves in the loss.

Now Lakeland must find away to pick up the pieces and move on from the loss to get its season back on track.

"We're going to do some team building," Hartzheim said. "Some team bonding. I think that's what we need."

Lakeland (5-5, 2-4 GNC) had an opportunity to right the ship on Thursday with a home game against Newman Catholic, which currently has just two wins this season. That game concluded after deadline. The T-Birds are on the road at Kingsford, Mich. this afternoon.
