George F. Callos Sr.

George F. Callos Sr., age 81, of Arbor Vitae, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026. A beloved father, grandfather, and foundational pillar of the Minocqua area community, George leaves behind a legacy of hard work, hospitality, and dedication to family.

Born in Manitowoc on February 20, 1945, George moved to Minocqua with his family in 1957 when his father, Frank Callos, purchased the Island Cafe. The restaurant became central to George’s life and identity. In 1970, George officially purchased the cafe from his father. He poured his heart and physical labor into the business, literally building the iconic establishment brick by brick. For decades, George ensured it remained a welcoming staple for generations of Northwoods residents and visitors alike. His commitment to tradition and community lives on, as the Island Cafe continues to be proudly owned and operated by the Callos family today.

Beyond his dedication to the restaurant, George possessed a profound talent and love for woodworking. A true craftsman, his artistry and meticulous handiwork remain beautifully displayed throughout the family home as a lasting testament to his patience and skill.

George missed his late wife, Crystal, deeply since her passing four years ago. In a beautiful testament to their enduring bond, George was called home on Crystal’s birthday, reunited with his true love at last.

George will be remembered for his steadfast work ethic, his creative spirit, his warm presence greeting guests at the cafe, and his enduring love for his family and the community he called home for nearly 70 years.

He is survived by his loving children, George Jr. (Lisa) Callos, Angela (Stefan Krueger) Callos, and Allison Callos; and his cherished granddaughter, Clara Callos.

George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Crystal; his parents, Frank and Marie Callos; his sister, Mary Anne; his half-sister, Antoinette; and two infant brothers.

A celebration of life will be held on August 29 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Island Cafe patio, located at 314 Oneida Street, Minocqua. Family and friends are invited to attend in casual attire to honor George’s memory and share stories of a life well-lived.
