LUHS set to induct four into Wall of Fame on Friday
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at approximately 7:30 p.m. or between the girls' and boys' basketball games against Rhinelander.
All fans, friends and family will be invited to stay after the boys' game ends for the unveiling of the Wall of Fame plaques at approximately 9:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and each inductee will get a chance to say a few words.
The four former T-Birds to be honored are Darold Londo of the Class of 1982, Nathan Piasecki of the Class of 2000, Mallory Peckels of the Class of 2004 and Phil Negri of the Class of 2007.
Darold Londo - Class of 1982
While at Lakeland Londo was a four-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, track and summer baseball, earning 13 varsity letters.
Upon graduation, he secured an appointment at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he also played football.
As a T-Bird, Londo won three varsity letters playing football and was first-team All-Lumberjack Conference twice. During his senior year he was a team captain, the Lumberjack Conference Football Player of the Year, and he was selected to play in the Wisconsin High School Shrine All-Star football game.
Londo also won two letters in basketball, and as a track athlete, he won dour more letters. In track, Londo was a team captain, and was a first-team All-Lumberjack Conference selection two times.
Londo played summer baseball at Lakeland and may legitimately be called one of our school's best baseball players ever. Darold won four more varsity letters, was a team captain, and was named first-team All-Lumberjack Conference two times. During Londo's senior year he was the Lumberjack Conference Baseball Player of the Year and was honorable mention all-state. He may be the only LUHS athlete to be named Conference Player of the Year in two different sports.
Darold went on to play football for the Army, where he had a very distinguished career having played in three Army-Navy games, and three bowl games. Londo was named a team captain, was an Eastern Athletic first-team all-conference player, and he was ranked No. 8 in the country in punt returns. Londo was also selected to play in the college East-West All-Star game.
Londo recently returned to the Lakeland area and is currently working with the Lac du Flambeau Band of Chippewa Indians as the CEO of the LdF Business Development Corporation. Since 1991 he has been married to Anne Sedivy of Manitowish Waters, and together they have three grown children: Andrew, Stephanie, and Austin.
Nathan Piasecki - Class of 2000
Piasecki entered LUHS prepared to contribute to its already strong wrestling program, winning four letters. During his freshman year at LUHS, he wrestled varsity at the 103-pound. class. It was quite a test as he started the season weighing just 93 pounds. He finished that regular season with a 24-8 record.
As a sophomore Piasecki was a WIAA Division 1 regional runner-up, sectional runner-up and a state runner-up. As a junior, Piasecki was a WIAA Division 1 regional champion, sectional champion and finished third at state. In his senior year, he was a Lumberjack Conference champion, WIAA regional champion, sectional champion and took fifth at state.
Piasecki finished his high school career with an amazing record of 117 wins and only 20 losses, qualified for the WIAA state meet three times, and garnered praise from former LUHS head coach Rick Ernst, who called him one of Lakelands toughest and best wrestlers ever.
Following each high school season, Piasecki competed in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. Some of his accomplishments included being 1997 Cadet Greco-Roman National champion, fourth place at the Cadet Greco World Championships in Pretoria, South Africa, 1998 Cadet Greco national runner-up, 1999 Junior National All-American, and in 2000, Junior National Champion.
Piasecki also participated in four years of cross country at LUHS and was a co-captain his senior year.
Piasecki went on to attend Northern Michigan University, affiliated U.S. Olympic Education Center, where he received a full scholarship to wrestle Greco-Roman.
Accomplishments while at NMU included taking fourth place at the U.S. Open, University National Champion twice, FILA Junior National Champion twice, placing seventh at the University World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, eighth place at the Junior World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, third place at the Haparanda Cup International in Haparanda, Sweden, sixth place at the University World Championships in Alberta, Canada.
During the offseasons, Piasecki even helped coach the Wisconsin Junior National Team out of Madison.
After college Piasecki was accepted as a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete in Colorado Springs, Colo. His accomplishments included winning a University National Championship as well as compiling more than 50 wins as a member of the U.S. Greco-Roman National Team.
In 2010, Piasecki was a U.S. Open National Champion and was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. at the 60 kilogram weight class.
Piasecki eventually served four years of active duty in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program. He was also an assistant wrestling coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.
He currently lives in Fort Meyers, Fla., where he works as a certified personal trainer.
Mallory Peckels - Class of 2004
While at Lakeland, Peckels won 11 varsity letters. She is best known for her outstanding play on the ice, playing for the LUHS boy's hockey team and eventually playing for the Ohio State University women's hockey team.
As a T-Bird, Peckels won four letters in cross country. During her senior year she was the conference meet champion and the Lumberjack Conference Runner of the Year. Peckels qualified as an individual for the state cross country meet three times.
As a soccer player Peckels won four varsity letters and was first-team all-conference twice. She was also a key player on Lakeland's first girls' team to ever qualify for the state soccer tournament and she would also go on to win all-state honors her senior year.
Her first love was hockey and with no girls' team to play on, Peckels would be the first girl to win a varsity letter in boys hockey at Lakeland, eventually winning three. She would also help the Lakeland boys' team win a Lumberjack Conference championship.
Peckels also played hockey for two years for Team Wisconsin, and for a Madison Capitols team that won state and regional titles. She was even selected for the Olympic Development Program in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Peckels was named the LUHS Senior Athlete of the Year in 2004.
After graduation, Peckels went to the Ohio State University, where she went on to win several Buckeye awards including Most Valuable Freshman, 7th Player of the Year award three times, assistant captain, OSU Scholar Athlete, all-academic team, and finally, Academic All-Big Ten. She played in 147 games, scored 19 goals, with 57 assists and 144 penalty minutes.
Peckels hopes she was an inspiration for young female athletes in the Northwoods.
Peckels and her husband Gustavo Miralda live in Lac du Flambeau and Peckels works for a natural supplement company while being a stay at home mother for her boys Teo, and newborn Tiago.
Phil Negri - Class of 2007
While at Lakeland Negri won 11 varsity letters. He was a standout athlete, who was easily recognized at Lakeland Union, as he was the starting quarterback and the point guard on some very good T-Bird football and basketball teams for multiple years.
In football, Negri won three letters and led the T-Birds to four playoff wins, which is the most in school history. In 2007, he led the team to the state semifinals in a game that will forever be known as the "Snow Bowl." Negri was also a two-time captain, and his senior year he was the team's Co-MVP. Negri set nearly every all-time passing record, including individual game, season, and career records. He also is No. 1 in career wins by a quarterback, with 22 in three years.
In basketball, Negri won four varsity letters, was first-team All-Lumberjack Conference and first-team All-Great Northern Conference once. He was named the Conference Player of the Year both his junior and senior years. He was also selected to play on the North's Div. 1 all-star team. Negri was a brilliant student and was the leading vote-getter for the WBCA Academic All-State team.
Negri set several school records including most wins: 81, assists in a game: 16, assists in a season: 176, and career assists: 480.
He also earned four letters in golf and was first-team All-Lumberjack Conference and first-team All-Great Northern Conference one time.
Negri attended UW-Whitewater where he played basketball and was named team captain for the War Hawks twice, as well as being named the Max Sparger Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2011. He played on Whitewater teams that won three conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament three times. He also made top 10 lists in the WIAC, including several UW-Whitewater 3-point shooting lists as well as game, season, and career assists categories.
Negri graduated from Whitewater in just three years and got an MBA from the University of Notre Dame in 2012. Negri is the chief operating officer for American Metal Chemical Corp and lives in Chicago. He is married to his wife Amanda and they have one newborn son, Charlie.
