Izaak Walton League webinar takes a closer look at road salt pollution

Impacts to wildlife, habitat, human health

Recently the Izaak Walton League of America introduced a webinar looking at road salt pollution. Besides their own Abby Hileman, the presentation featured Dr. Amy Downing of Ohio Wesleyan University and Dr. Sujay Kaushal. The Salt Watch Program through the Izaak Walton League came to be in 2018 when a road salt spill was found outside the League’s headquarters in Maryland. The site was a roadway over the Muddy Branch, which flows into the Potomac River. It lead researchers to wonder what that salt was doing to nearby waterways. The Potomac River, Hileman said, has seen a 200% increase in salt over the last 30 years. Much of that, now, has been attributed to road salt and other human means.
