First ice calls for extra precautions

As temperatures dip and the lakes begin to get that first skim of ice, many anglers’ minds turn toward ice fishing. The old adage “first ice is best ice” rings in their ears, a popular saying for generations. First ice, though, does take some consideration and some caution. First ice is not for beginners, as most anglers know. Even seasoned ice anglers may not feel comfortable venturing out too quickly. But for those who do, there are some things to keep in mind.
