Suzanne Marie Abendroth, 87, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019, at Milestone Senior Living in Woodruff. She was born on Jan. 19, 1932, in Oak Park, Ill., the younger of two daughters of Charles and Florence (Holing) Jonak.

Suzanne and her sister Barbara spent part of their youth in Odgensburg with their aunt, Alice, where Suzanne exercised her love of animals, bringing home strays and riding horses. Once the effects of the Great Depression had eased, Suzanne and Barbara returned home to the Chicago area where Suzanne graduated from Austin High School in 1949. She attended Lake Forest College after graduation where she began a lifelong friendship with her roommate, Marie Abendroth.

Visiting Marie’s family home in Rhinelander, Sue met Marie’s big brother Carl. On June 16, 1951, Suzanne and Carl were married. Shortly after their wedding, Carl and Suzanne moved to Washington, DC, for a year and then settled in Reed City, Mich., where all three of their children were born.

During Carl’s 40-year career in the hardwood flooring business and after retirement, Carl and Suzanne travelled all over the world and settled in several locations, including White Lake, Wisc.; Memphis; Crystal Falls, Mich.; Singapore; Scottsdale Ariz.; Wausau; Fredericksburg, Texas; Hilton Head, South Carolina; Manitowish Waters; Eagle River; Sayner; and Woodruff. They moved into Milestone Senior Living when it opened in early 2013.

Friends and family will long remember Suzanne’s graciousness, compassion, and easy conversation, and admire the mutual love and respect evident in the presence of Sue and Carl.

Suzanne was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Arbor Vitae and formerly Trinity Lutheran Church in Boulder Junction. She was active for many years as a volunteer in eldercare and hospice. Over the years, she completed many art projects — including a full wall mural in their home in White Lake. She instilled her love of jigsaw puzzles in both her daughters.

Survivors include son Tom (Cherie) Abendroth of Arbor Vitae, two daughters Debra Stephenson of Sayner and Barbra Guerra of Woodruff, five grandchildren, two great-children, two nieces, Michele Pompe of Poulsbo, Wash.,, and Terri Lara of Lombard, Ill., a brother-in-law John (Anne) Abendroth of San Diego, and a sister-in-law Marie Winter of Deerfield Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, and one granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Arbor Vitae with a Gathering of Friends & Family at noon. Refreshments will be served. Burial will take place at a later date in the Park Cemetery in Ogdensburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or Ministry Hospice.
