Irene Mary Ulfig (Rukuslo), age 92 of Woodruff, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018 at Seasons of Life Hospice House. Irene was born on Oct. 29, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of Peter and Bernice (Levicke) Rukuslo.
Irene married Vincent L. Ulfig on Aug. 4, 1945 at Little Flower Church in Chicago. She planned her wedding in one week while Vince was home on leave from serving in the United States Navy during World War II. While Vince and Irene began their life together in Chicago, they moved to Lac du Flambeau in the early 1950s to build Vince’s Housekeeping Cottages on Little Crawling Stone Lake. They owned and operated “Vince’s Supper Club” on Hwy 70 West from 1964 to 1974. Irene would be found in the kitchen providing their customers with specialties such as, prime rib, bbq ribs, and roast duckling with wild rice dressing.   She continued to cook delicious food at Tula’s Restaurant, The Minocqua Country Club, and Polecat and Lace in Minocqua. After retirement, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
Irene served her community through The Lioness Club. She was past president of this club and participated in many activities along with her husband, Vince, a member of the Lac du Flambeau Lions Club.
Irene loved to play games. She was a regular pinochle player at the Woodruff Senior Center. She loved getting together with Margaret and “The Golden Girls” for games and fun. Irene was an optimistic fun-loving and kind mother, grandmother and friend. She was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. She will be dearly missed by her four children: Karen Hintz of Florida, Vince (Wendy) Ulfig of Lac du Flambeau, Charlie of Green Bay, and Betty (Jerry) Speich of Rhinelander; grandchildren, Jason (Noel), Kary, Vince, Robert (Kris), Weston (Emily), Melissa (Michael), Scott (Vanessa), Becca, and Angela, and great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Porter, Emily, Nicholas, Audrey, Raven, Forrest Vincent, Brianna, Dylan, Angelina, Gwen, Alex, Kole, Gracelyn, and Kaelyn Irene. Irene is preceded in death by her parents, sister Ethel Mertes, son-in-law Ed Hintz, daughter-in-law Chris Ulfig, and two infant brothers, Edward and Richard.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff, with a gathering time one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
