Despite a 101-56 loss to conference leading Rhinelander, the Lakeland boys swim team had some impressive performances for senior/parents night at their last home meet of the season Jan. 24 at the Lakeland pool.

“We thought the guys swam pretty well,” head Lakeland head coach Chris Garcia said. “It being the end of the season and still practicing hard. We also were down a couple swimmers due to the flu. Some of the guys swam off-events and had good times.”

Tyler Teichmiller, who usually swims the 100 breast, swam the 100 free in 52.60, less than a second behind Russel Benoy of Rhinelander who won the race with a 52.19.

“Tyler Teichmiller did a nice job in the 100 free,” Garcia said. “He was just behind Rhinelander’s Russel Benoy who is a good sprinter.”

Brandon Boh, who is usually a sprinter, swam the 100 breaststroke and came away with third place in 1:12.53.

“Brandon Boh took on the 100 breast and had an excellent time for maybe swimming that event only one other time this year,” Garcia said.

In addition to these nice off-event swims, there were also some career performances by a couple Lakeland swimmers.

Alex Tucker swam the 200 freestyle in 1:54 and won the race. It was a career best finish.

Liam Hogan also had a career swim. His was in the 500-yard freestyle which he won with an impressive 4:59.72.

Other victories in the meet for Lakeland were the 200 individual medley, which Liam Hogan won with a 2:14.41, and the 400 relay team of Teichmiller, Tucker, Boh, and Hogan, who won the race in 3:26.89, which was almost eight seconds faster than Rhinelander’s “A” team of Russel Benoy, Devon Gaber, Joseph Heck, and Nolan Francis who finished in 3:34.51.

“Overall, it was a very positive meet,” Garcia said. “The guys were looking to have good times and not worry so much about the score.”

Next up for the T-Birds is the conference meet at Medford on Friday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
