MECCA Trails and WinMan Trails are excited to announce the creation of a new cross country ski race in the Northwoods — the Turtle River Pursuit. The race, which combines the two disciplines of cross country skiing — classic and skate — into one event, will be held the weekend of Feb. 9 and 10, 2019. The first leg of the Pursuit, the 11K classic race, will be at MECCA Trails in Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The second leg, the 11K skate race, will be at WinMan Trails in Manitowish Waters on Sunday, Feb. 10. The race is open to both individual an teams. Saturday’s results determine the skier’s starting time on Sunday. The first skier and team to cross the finish line on Sunday wins the two-day race. Awards will be given to the top three women and men in both the individual and team categories as well as age-group winners.

The Gogebic Range Health Foundation is collaborating with the Turtle River Pursuit, providing its expertise in community engagement and fundraising. The Community Pursuit is a year-round outreach bringing kids, families and seniors out to the trail systems for exercise, fresh air, instruction focused on nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

This winter competition will attract hundreds of competitors, spectators, community volunteers and sponsors. Sponsors from the business community include financial support, in kind contributions and volunteers. The Turtle River Pursuit promises to be an exciting event in the Wisconsin Northwoods.
