The Lakeland Nordic Ski team was well represented at the legendary American Birkebeiner races in Hayward this past weekend.  

Very well represented.

Going up against competition from around the world, three different Lakeland Union High School skiers won their respective age divisions in the Kortelopet, a shortened 29K race on the Birkebeiner trail.

“Kind of like doing a half marathon versus a full, though the Korte is more than half due to convenience of start,” Lakeland head coach Erich Kern explained.

Johanna Craig was the fastest overall female in the Kortelopet Classic race, finishing 20th overall with a time of 1:38:19.2.   

“Very impressive race,” Kern said of Craig’s performance.

On the boys side of the Kortelopet Classic, Jakob Craig finished first for boys age 15-16, and eighth overall with a time of 1:27:40.0, while Cody Schneider finished seventh overall and fourth for males age 17-18 with a time of 1:27:27.30.

“Both boys skied strong for this distance,” Kern said.

In the Kortelopet Skate race Mia Case was the fastest female age 15-16, and 62nd overall, with a time of 1:33:46.10.

Kiera Rotar finished in 321st place, 22nd for girls age 15-16, with a time of 1:54:05.0. 

Sylvia Meza finished in 371st place overall,12th for girls age 13-14, with a time of  1:56:58.30.  

Stephanie Mauzer finished in 375th place, 22nd for females age 17-18, with a time or 1:57:08.6.

Ashley Ullius finished in 376th place, 23rd for females age 17-18, with a time of 1:57:09.3.

Riley Mauzer finished in 382nd place, 24th for females age 17-18, with a time of 1:57:16.3, and Samantha Coffen finished 400th overall and 27th for girls age 15-16 with a time of 1:58:56.10.

For the boys in the Kortelopet Skate, Casey Van Hefty was 17th overall and 2nd for boys age 13-14 with a time of 1:27:07.60.  

Jake Van Hefty was 24th overall and eighth for boys age 15-16 with a time of 1:27:41.10.  

Forrest Dorsey was 32nd overall and 10th for boys age 15-16 with a time of 1:28:48.40.

Brock Metzger finished 123rd overland 37th for males age 17-18 with a time of 1:40:55.90, and Will Beede-Morgan finished 212th overall and 35th for boys age 15-16 with a time of 1:47:31.5.

Two Lakeland skiers raced the full 50K Birkebeiner Skate race.

Aidan Graf finished 1011th overall and 113th for males 18-24 with a time of 3:35:41.0.  Tony Holmes finished 1013th overall and 115th in that same age division with a time of 3:35:51.30

“Some raced. Some skied to enjoy the event. Congratulations to all those who took part in the Birkie events,” Kern said.



Other area resident results

A number of other Lakeland area residents raced on Birkie weekend as well. 

Erin Blow finished the Birkebeiner Classic in 4:01.44.4, which was good for 251st place overall and 10th for females age 25-39. 

Scott Crawford finished the Kortelopet Classic in 3:28:48.3 and was 704th overall and 59th for males age 65-69.

Zeke Fashingbauer raced the Birkebeiner Skate and finished in 97th place overall and 23rd for males age 30-34 with at time of 2:40:33.9.

Delaney Fitzpatrick finished the Birkebeiner classic in 3:41.50.5, which was good for 83rd place overall and 2nd for females age 18-24.

Joanne Fitzpatrick finished the Birkebeiner Classic in 5:07:47.0 and was 798th overall and 16th for females age 55-59.

Tressa Hastreiter raced the Kortelopet skate and finished in 1334th place and 51st for women 40-44 with a time of 3:21:16.10

Deborah Karow finished the Kortelopet Classic in 3:07:01.5, which was good for 530th place and 19th for women age 60-64.

Alexander Ostrander finished the Birkebeiner Classic in 5:32:32.4 which was good for 1062nd place overall and 69th for men age 30-34.

Derek Rasmussen raced the Birkebeiner Skate in 2:30.41.5 and finished 41st overall and 10th for men age 30-34.

Melanie Rasmussen finished the Birkebeiner Skate in 3:39.59.8, which was good for 1114th place overall and 22nd for females age 30-34.

Jack Tenge finished the Kortelopet Classic in 3:38.58.40 in 773rd place overall and 32nd place for men age 70-74.

Connie Trapp finished the Birkebeiner Classic in 6:18:31.8, which was good for 1455th place overall and 29th for females age 50-54.

David Wilson raced the Birkebeiner Classic and finished in 1047th place overall and 118th place for men age 55-59 with a time of 5:31:30.3.
