The Lakeland wrestling team place third as a team at the WIAA Division 2 Regional meet in Amherst on Saturday, Feb. 9, and two Thunderbirds are moving on to sectionals after securing second place individual finishes.

Both Tim Burnett at 126 pounds and Jason Hilgart at 145 pounds are continuing their season.

Burnett first received a bye in the quarterfinal, then he pinned Jacob Koran of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards in 1:49. He then lost the first place match 12-0 to Luke Knight of Tomahawk, but he won by RULE over Koran to capture second place and punch his ticket to Wrightstown.

“Tim Burnett’s going on which is awesome” Lakeland head coach Adam Bremer said. “To have a freshman that has that kind of success and gets that kind of experience, what it’s like to get through the sectional is awesome. Then it becomes a normal experience for him, so it’s something that he’s hungry for. We’re really excited for Tim being able to qualify. We’re looking for good things from Tim. There’s no pressure on him whatsoever going over there. His job is to go over there and surprise somebody.”

Jason Hilgart at 145 pounds is also moving on to sectionals. Hilgart received a bye in the quarter finals and then pinned Issaiah Scheffler of Tomahawk in 1:00. He then lost the first place match 6-2 to Brant Hall of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards before winning by RULE over Scheffler to take second place.

“Jason Hilgart put together a really solid day,” Bremer said. “Something we’ll work on is how to really get his offense going early and he can just build his confidence early and kind of use that momentum to score points from other positions.”

In other action, at 106 Sawyer Duir placed third after going 1-1 on the day. At 113 Harry Nemcek placed third and went 2-2. At 132, Nazar Lenz finished third going 1-2.  Patrick Grams placed sixth at 138 and went 1-2 with a bye. At 160 Brady Edwards went 1-2 to take fourth place.

At 170 Xavier Burgess was injured in the first place match against Ben Elsen of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards and was unable to wrestle the wrestle back match and lost by RULE to Ryan Skees of Tomahawk. Consequentially, Burgess took third.

At 182, Andre Starynski took third after going 2-2 with a bye, and Henry Evenhouse went 2-2 with a bye to take third place.

“We were hoping for a few more,” Bremer said. “All those third places are one match away from being able to continue the season. Sometimes thats one missed opportunity or one bad choice. We all have those in everything that we do so it’s kind of hard to get too upset about it. It’s got to make us hungry.  We got something to grind for and work hard for next year.”

Tomahawk won the team regional with 270 points. Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards took second with 246.5 points. Lakeland was third with 130 points. Mosinee was fourth with 121 points. Amherst was fifth was 120.5 points, and Waupaca was sixth with 110 points.

The sectional meet is at Wrightstown high school on Saturday. Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m.
