The Lakeland Union High School gymnastics team traveled to Ashland on Saturday, Feb. 16, for the Great Northern Conference meet. Four Thunderbirds competed in the event.

Julie Neuberg highlighted the day for Lakeland with a third place podium finish on the vault.  Her score was 8.350. She also scored a 6.175 on the uneven bars to take ninth place and finished in 18th place overall.

Anna Thompson placed 14th overall with a 15th place finish on both the vault and the bars and a 13th place finish on the beam. Her scores were 6.850, 4.40, and 6.0 respectively.

Anna Smith was 24th overall with a 17th place, 4.0 score on the bars and a 14th place, 6.250 score with her floor routine.

Teammate Cameryn Teichmiller, who finished 25th overall, tied Smith for 14th with a floor routine score of 6.250. She also placed 19th on the uneven bars with a score of 3.350.

“I am very proud,” head Lakeland head coach Haley Farrell said. “They all competed in more than one event. Some of them stepped up. Cameryn Teichmiller and Anna Smith both did their floor routines, which was very exciting. Anna (Smith), that was the second floor routine she’s done in her life. That was impressive.”

For Lakeland, beyond scores and finishes, this season has been about simply competing, because the participation numbers are down. Each Lakeland competitor has kept the program going, and coach Farrell says she’s seen progress and the girls’ confidence grow with each competition.

“They get excited about it and then are all gung-ho to go practice it,” Farrell said.

The core of gymnasts who competed Saturday will be supported by a promising number of incoming freshmen gymnasts next year.

“We don’t have any seniors, so they’ll all be here next year, too,” Farrell said of her team.

Lakeland finished fifth as a team at the conference meet with a total score of 51.625. Medford won the small schools conference championship with a total score of 128.125. Rhinelander was second with a score of 119.875. Mosinee was third with a score of 97.825, and Chequamegon was fourth with a score of 78.250.
