The Lakeland gymnastics team competed against Wisconsin Rapids on Jan. 3 at home, and despite the 110.725-53.675 team loss, a couple Thunderbirds had some very nice performances.

Julie Neuberg won the vaulting competition with a score of 8.40, beating out Rapids’ Mckenzie Schuld, who was second with a 8.35, and Tyla Weidman, who scored 8.20 for third. Neuberg also placed fourth in the uneven bars with a score of 5.925.

Sarah Thompson was the only Thunderbird to compete in every event. She finished second in the balance beam with a 6.80, she finished third in the uneven bars with a 6.50, and she was fifth in both the vault and floor exercise with scores of 7.25 and 6.10.

All around she finished fourth on the night with an overall total score of 26.65. Rapids’ Weidman won the all around meet with a 29.075, followed by teammates Schulz and Madisyn Hasenohrl who scored 28.325 and 27.65 respectively.

Anna Thompson also competed for Lakeland and scored a 6.05 in the balance beam, good for fifth, and a 2.50 in the uneven bars, placing her tenth.

Cami Teichmiller and Anna Smith also competed in the uneven bars. Teichmiller scored a 3.40, which put her in eighth place, and Smith scored a 3.25 which landed her in ninth.

Numbers of competitors have been low this year for Lakeland, so every Thunderbird who did participate was a key contributor to the program.

Head coach Haley Farrell was absent from the team due to health and unable to be reached for comment.

Next up for the Thunderbirds was a meet at Chequamegon on Jan. 7 past deadline.  Coverage will be in Friday’s paper.
