The top doubles squad for Lakeland Union High School has had a solid 2018 campaign despite being put together this season.

Jack Garcia and Tony Holmes went unblemished in Great Northern Conference play this spring and were named Doubles Players of the Year.

The Thunderbird tandem had such an impressive resume that they received a special qualifying bid to the WIAA Division 2 Tennis Championships in Madison, beginning last Thursday, despite losing its first match at the sectional meet the previous week.

Garcia and Holmes faced Brent Gooden and Jared Chesak of Kewaskum in their first match at the state tournament. Unfortunately, it was a short trip as Gooden and Chesak were able to get the upper hand, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

"Jack Garcia and Tony Holmes were a little nervous in the first set and while the games were closer than the score showed, they were just getting acclimated to the big stage, losing 2-6," LUHS head coach Ted Dasler said. "The duo settled down in the second and held their own even taking a 4-2 lead before falling behind and eventually falling 4-6. Jack and Tony really showed their metal and fortitude in pressing their opponents to the end."

Garcia and Holmes finished the season with a record of 17-7.
